District 9, released in 2009, is a science-fiction movie, reflecting many realities of South Africa's previous and present. It was a block-buster hit of 2009, and thus far, has grossed $200 million. Sara Vilkomerson, a film critic at The New York Observer wrote: "District 9 is essentially the most thrilling science fiction movie to come back along in ages; positively the most thrilling movie of the summer season; and fairly probably the most effective film I've seen all year."
